About Boxing
Training for boxing, like many sports, is linked to the standard that you are in the sport. For a begninner in boxing, training will consist of a minimal routine which might consist of learning how to hit the heavy bag, the speed bag, and the double end bag (a small bag with a cord on top and bottom connecting it to the floor nad ceiling), as well as shadowboxing in front of a mirror and general aerobic fitness training including skipping, calisthnetics and jogging.
As the boxer progresses towards amateur or competition status, they will also take part in sparring within the ring and more strenuous training and fitness regemes.
Sparring is practice fighting, which aims to improve training skills and fitness. For sparring, participants require to wear a gumshield, head-guard and groin-guard - you can get these items from Simply-sports. Other specific training equipment includes:
Sparring gloves - which are designed to protects the boxer's hands (not the opponents head!)
Headgear - to protect the boxer from soft tissue damage to the head. (Headgear offers no protection from hard punches.)
Mouthpiece or gumshield - to protect the insides of the mouth and teeth.
Handwraps - protect the knuckles and wrists when training and sparring.
Jump rope - is used to increase aerobic fitness and stamina while improving footwork and agility.
Focus mitts - are padded targets worn on the trainers hands for the boxer to practice striking.
Heavy Bag - this bag is used to practice punching combinations and to teach beginner boxers where to his an opponent.
Speed bag - is used to improve hand-eye co-ordination and boxing speed.
Floor-ceiling bag (double end bag) - is used as practice for target practice and timing. This bag is useful as it moves around more freely than a heavy bag.
Boxing Ring - this is where competitions take place. Sparring can also take place in a boxing ring.
